Team& Role Overview

The Portfolio Risk Management Team forms an integral part of both the delivery of our commercial strategy and the holistic management of our customer bases. Located in Singapore, the position of AVP / VP Portfolio Risk Management is an important member of the Portfolio Risk Management team.

The Portfolio Risk Management team manage portfolio risk including credit, asset and market risk analysis and restructuring activities. The team drive commercial decision making, including investment in aircraft assets and everchanging appropriate allocation of the portfolio based on our specialist understanding of our global customer base and the aviation industry. This ensures that SMBC AC has a balanced view of the risks which are an inherent aspect of the industry and ensures efficient approvals of customer transactions and resolution to any customer issues in an appropriate and timely manner.

The AVP / VP Portfolio Risk Management will be managing a portfolio of airline lessees and supporting senior team members to develop and improve portfolio risk management activities of our business. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the monitoring of airlines and aviation environment in the Asia Pacific (“APAC”) region, delivering insights on both the general market dynamic and on specific airline issues.

Core Responsibilities

  • Data-Driven Risk Analytics: Spearhead the development of advanced analytics and improve existing risk management systems. Leverage modern analytics tools to build early-warning indicators and reporting systems that elevate proactive portfolio management and accelerate decision-making.
  • Deal Structuring & Commercial Partnership: Act as a critical partner to the commercial teams, providing expert credit advisory to structure complex leasing transactions that maximize risk-adjusted returns and drive regional growth.
  • Credit Expertise & Underwriting: Lead end-to-end credit due diligence for prospective and existing airline clients in the APAC region. Deliver sharp, commercially grounded risk views to shape over-arching business strategy.
  • Proactive Airline Surveillance: Maintain continuous, data-augmented oversight of the APAC portfolio. Synthesize macroeconomic trends, industry data, and internal systems to anticipate credit migrations and identify market opportunities or vulnerabilities early.
  • Risk Mitigation & Workouts: Identify deteriorating credit profiles and drive strategic interventions. Lead complex restructuring, negotiation, and collection efforts for high-risk or distressed accounts to safeguard capital and mitigate regional exposure.
  • Executive Reporting & Stakeholder Management: Craft compelling, executive-ready credit memos, approval papers, and annual reviews. Ensure precise, high-quality risk narratives are seamlessly delivered to the executive team and key shareholders.

Qualifications& Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in an analytical field such as finance, engineering, data science or accounting is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the aviation sector, particularly in risk management for aircraft lessors.
  • Solid understanding of the airline and aircraft leasing industries.
  • Strong analytical skills with a keen attention to detail; organized and dependable.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced, results-oriented global environment, demonstrating initiative while also collaborating effectively within a team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel occasionally on short notice.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and verbal) is essential. Proficiency in another Asian language is advantageous.
