Kitchen Assistant (Nutrition & Food Science Laboratory)

Location: Pasir Ris, Singapore

Contract Period: 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2027

Option to Renew: 1 January 2028 – 31 December 2028 (Subject to School's Requirement)

Position Overview

The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily operations of the Nutrition & Food Science (NFS) laboratories by maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, preparing ingredients for practical lessons, managing food supplies, and providing administrative support to ensure the smooth delivery of NFS lessons.

Working Hours

  • Monday to Thursday: 6:30 AM – 3:30 PM (inclusive of 30-minute lunch break)
  • Friday: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM (inclusive of 30-minute lunch break)
  • No work on Saturdays, Sundays, and Gazetted Public Holidays.

Key Responsibilities

Kitchen & Laboratory Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the Nutrition & Food Science kitchen, food laboratory, and preparation room.
  • Wash, dry, and store cleaning cloths, aprons, and kitchen utensils.
  • Clean food science equipment, sinks, stoves, ovens, refrigerators, workstations, and other kitchen facilities.
  • Mop kitchen floors and ensure work areas are clean after every lesson.
  • Organise and tidy teachers' and students' workstations, cupboards, drawers, and sinks.
  • Ensure kitchen equipment and appliances are well maintained and properly stored.
  • Check that gas valves, electrical switches, ovens, and knives are safely secured after use.

Food Preparation Support

  • Prepare, cut, weigh, and pack ingredients before practical lessons.
  • Organise ingredients and store them correctly in refrigerators, freezers, and cupboards.
  • Monitor daily stock of perishable food items.
  • Work closely with teachers to ensure ingredients are available for lessons.

Inventory & Administrative Support

  • Receive, verify, and organise food deliveries and orders.
  • Maintain basic stock records and monitor inventory levels.
  • Assist teachers with kitchen and laboratory preparations.
  • Provide administrative support related to kitchen operations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the School Supervisor.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Primary School education.
  • Basic understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety.
  • Able to read and understand simple English instructions.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in food handling, kitchen operations, catering, or similar support roles.
  • Experience working in a school, educational institution, catering service, or commercial kitchen is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of food preparation and safe food handling practices.
  • Familiar with common kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Good organisational and housekeeping skills.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physically fit to perform cleaning, lifting, and food preparation duties.
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
  • Team player with a positive attitude.
