Chartering Manager

We are seeking an experienced Chartering Manager to oversee freight procurement and vessel chartering activities across Asia. This role is responsible for managing both dry bulk and container shipments, ensuring efficient transportation of steel products, raw materials, and industrial commodities while optimizing freight costs and maintaining strong relationships with shipping partners.
Key Responsibilities
Freight & Chartering Management
Manage end-to-end chartering activities for dry bulk vessels and container shipments across regional and international trade routes.
Source suitable vessels, negotiate freight rates, and secure competitive chartering arrangements for cargo movements.
Coordinate shipment planning, cargo nominations, laycan schedules, and vessel allocations to ensure timely delivery.
Monitor freight performance and identify opportunities to improve transportation efficiency and reduce logistics costs.
Commercial Negotiation & Contract Management
Negotiate charter party agreements, freight contracts, laytime terms, demurrage, dispatch, and Contracts of Affreightment (COA) where applicable.
Maintain strong commercial relationships with shipowners, operators, brokers, freight forwarders, and shipping lines.
Resolve freight disputes, claims, and operational issues while protecting the company's commercial interests.
Market Analysis & Operational Support
Monitor freight market trends, vessel availability, and shipping indices to support commercial decision-making.
Work closely with trading, operations, logistics, and supply chain teams to coordinate shipment execution and resolve operational challenges.
Liaise with port agents, surveyors, terminal operators, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth cargo handling and vessel operations.
Compliance & Cost Management
Ensure all chartering activities comply with company policies, maritime regulations, sanctions requirements, insurance, and safety standards.
Support freight budgeting, cost forecasting, and continuous improvement initiatives to optimise transportation performance.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years of experience in chartering, freight procurement, shipping operations, or maritime logistics.
Proven experience managing both dry bulk and container shipments, preferably involving steel, iron ore, coal, scrap metal, or other bulk commodities.
Strong understanding of charter party agreements, COA structures, laytime calculations, demurrage, freight negotiation, and shipping market practices.
Established network with shipowners, vessel operators, brokers, freight forwarders, or shipping partners across the Asia region will be highly advantageous.
Excellent negotiation, stakeholder management, and commercial decision-making skills.
Strong analytical abilities with experience monitoring freight market trends and transportation costs.
Able to work effectively in a fast-paced international trading and logistics environment.
