About the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is recognised as a global leader in sustainable development and the built environment. Established in 1981 as one of NTU’ s founding engineering schools, CEE has continuously adapted to tackle pressing issues related to urbanisation, climate change, and the transformation of civil and environmental systems.

CEE has about 45 faculty members, forming an internationally recognised team of academics who actively engage in dedicated research centres and groups that promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. Through partnerships with government agencies and industry firms, the School drives research breakthroughs and facilitates effective technology transfer that contribute to Singapore's development and address global engineering challenges.

The Position

The College of Engineering at NTU Singapore is seeking a visionary and accomplished leader to serve as the Chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This is an exceptional opportunity for a distinguished scholar to lead one of Asia’s premier engineering schools and shape the future of civil and environmental engineering education and research both in the region and globally.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the Full Professor (Tenured) level and will provide strategic leadership to ensure the School’ s continued growth and excellence. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within Singapore ’ s dynamic innovation ecosystem, contribute to national research priorities, and lead a world-class academic institution with strong industry and government partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the School's academic, research, and internationalisation strategies in alignment with NTU's vision and Singapore's national research priorities. Provide direction that advances CEE's position as a global leader in sustainable development and the built environment.
  • Research and Innovation Excellence: Drive the School's research agenda in emerging areas of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and maritime studies. Strengthen CEE's international reputation for research excellence through strategic initiatives and impactful interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Education Leadership: Oversee curriculum development and programme enhancement to ensure graduates are wellequipped to address evolving industry needs and global challenges. Champion innovative pedagogical approaches and maintain programme excellence across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Faculty Development and Culture: Recruit, mentor, and support top international talent while fostering an inclusive, collegial, and high-performing culture. Create an environment that enables faculty members to excel in teaching, research, and service, thereby supporting their career advancement and professional growth.
  • External Engagement and Partnerships: Establish and strengthen partnerships with industry, government agencies, and international academic institutions to promote translational impact. Leverage Singapore's position as a regional hub to build collaborations that advance research, enhance student opportunities, and contribute to economic development.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a distinguished scholar with the following qualities:

  • International reputation in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related fields, along with a strong record of impactful research and scholarly publications.
  • Visionary leadership with the ability to elevate CEE to new heights by venturing into unexplored scientific terrains, pioneering innovative research directions, and positioning the School at the forefront of emerging fields in civil and environmental engineering.
  • Strong management skills and transformational capability to drive organisational change, optimise resources, and lead the School through strategic initiatives that enhance research impact, educational excellence, and operational effectiveness.
  • Adaptability and cultural intelligence to understand and navigate Singapore’s local industry context, forge meaningful partnerships with local industries and government agencies, and work effectively within the regional business and policy environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure competitive research funding and build productive partnerships with industry, government agencies, and international institutions to advance translational research and innovation.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, along with a dedication to nurturing the next generation of engineering leaders and innovators.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with strategic acumen to engage effectively with multiple stakeholders and drive institutional excellence.
