Freight Trader (Tankers)

An independent energy trading company is expanding its freight team in Asia. The Freight Trader will optimise vessel chartering and manage freight exposure across global oil trading activities. This role sits at the intersection of shipping, trading, and risk, with responsibility for physical freight operations and commercial freight strategy.

Role

Reporting to the Head of Freight, the role involves managing freight exposure across oil and product movements. You will source and charter vessels in the spot and time charter markets, negotiating rates and contract terms with shipowners and brokers while optimising vessel selection based on cost, timing, and trading strategy. The position requires close collaboration with oil cargo trading teams to incorporate freight into cargo economics, support deal structuring, and provide market intelligence. You will continuously analyse tanker market fundamentals — including fleet utilisation, supply-demand dynamics, and global trade flows — to identify market opportunities and support commercial decision-making. In addition, you will monitor freight exposure and overall voyage performance to ensure alignment with internal commercial objectives.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in maritime studies or a related discipline, with a 5 to 10 years of experience in freight trading, chartering, or a closely related commercial shipping role. A strong understanding of tanker markets, including vessel classes and key global trade routes, is essential. The role requires a highly commercial mindset, strong negotiation and relationship management skills, and the ability to analyse market trends, freight economics, and trading opportunities effectively.
